So here at The Cavegirl forums we had decided it would be fun and interesting to feature members of our community so that we could all get to know each other a little better. With some discussion it was an easy choice to decide upon Tortacular! He’s a member of the TTL Gunslingers (a fellow Canadian as I may gloat) and has a reputation of being a great person to play with and to talk too.
So I sat down to shoot him some questions:
V: First off who the heck are you and what do you do?!
T: I’m Ryan. An ordinary prarie kid from Canada. What do I do? I uh, slack off a lot. Technically I’m still a student, but I’m not in classes this semester. I am lazing it up bigtime. It’s almost heinous.
I’d feel guilty, if I wasn’t so lazy.
Tortacular notices my laziness to respond and asks me a question…
T: Are you playing halo while conducting this interview?
V: maybe… ![]()
V: For those of us who don’t know you that well; What is the one thing we should know and well be afraid of!?
T: uhm… I drank a slurpee today when it was -29 and snowing. and it was good. I feel that’s important. I don’t strike fear into the hearts of many. Mostly just puzzlement and bewilderment.
V: How and when did you get into gaming?
T: like a lot of people it would’ve been Super Mario Bros. I played a bit of Pong in my Grandparents basement before that, but definitely SMB on the Nintendo. My mom and I used to play that all the time. We played tons of Nintendo games together. She got right into that stuff with me. I swear she likes Zelda more than I do. I was hooked from the jump.
V: thats awesome i wish i could get my grandparents to play video games!
T: I never actually saw my grandparents play Pong, but it was at their house so I assume they did My mom is currently hooked on Tiger Woods, actually.
V: Why Tortacular for a gamer tag?!
T: Well, it spun off a reallife nickname so I’ve been using it since Halo CE first came out. I got the nickname “Tortoise” while playing High School JV Basketball… because I was slow, especially for a point guard. It also helped that I shared the same first name with a couple of buddies. Eventually it got shortened to “Tort”, which all my old friends still call me.
I’m not sure what made me think of “Tortacular”. My brain is just crazy that way.
V: How did you stumble across The Cavegirls and why have you stuck around!?? Of course
T: Well you can blame bs angel, Zoom, Ra and DonWan for that. I applied to join the Gunslingers at the end of September and ended up playing with them over the span of a few days shortly thereafter. bs has the site linked from her Gunslingers profile… and I just can’t resist the opportunity to spam a message board.
Besides it’s filled with some cool peoples that I like to game with, and you have a “What Are You Listening To Now” Thread that I have basically taken over.
V: So… what are you listening to now?
T: right this minute? Halo J
Before that some Sam Roberts, and the new Our Lady Peace collection.
V: If you could be any one character from a video game who would it be and why?
T: Oh good question.. Hmm…
After a long thoughtful pause
T: I was going to say Link, but he has to do all that work rescuing the Princess every 2 weeks. I almost said Maxi from Soul Calibur. That dude was just badass. He has nunchuka, he must be the man. Butttttt… I’ve gotta go with Revan from KOTOR. I mean… finding out that you’re the former Dark Lord of the Sith? It doesn’t get any better than that. Best game story twist ever, in my opinion.
V: Are you a Double-Double kind of guy?! this will probably only be understood by Canadians!
T: No dude, I don’t drink coffee at all. Ever.
V: what kind of canadian are you!?
T: the kind who doesn’t like the taste of coffee . I support Tim Hortons via cookie purchases. Those cookies with the icing smilie faces they do in the spring… for some charity… best cookies EVER.
V: Who are the TTL Gunslingers? And what do they (the group) mean to you?
T: They’re a group of gamers who put camaraderie, sportsmanship and honour above simply winning the game. They respect their fellow gamers, even when those gamers don’t do the same in kind. The TTL Gunslingers are to put it simply, the reason I still play Halo on a regular basis. When I joined the group in September I was hardly playing anymore. Maybe once or twice a week, for an hour or two.
It wasn’t fun anymore. I was tired of being trashtalked by children on the other team (or my own team) and I was tired of the lack of teamwork in team games. I was tired of the modding and cheating and the general disrespect that permeates not just XBL but the internet in general.
Then I met this group of truly great people who also happen to be gamers. Now I play almost every day, for at least a few hours. The experience is like night and day.
V: I bet with the recent TTL Foundation and store that was set up you are uber proud of it! Could u explain it in a nut shell for me? (plugging it oh yeah..kudos for me!)
T: Yeah I think it’s great. I want to clarify that I had ZERO to do with setting any of it up. That’s our web geniuses and our Overloards doing. I believe Pink and Burritoh handled the bulk of it. The Foundation is just a great thing. I’m all for anything that supports people injured while fighting in a war. I will certainly be pleased to see some of my money going there when I purchase things from the store.
V: yeah but your still a part of it by supporting it!
T: The foundation will take 30% of any and all sales made from the store, as well as 100% of all direct donations and donate them to a charity (or charities) that are deemed suitable. Namely the idea is that the money go directly to the people who need it, rather than into bureaucracy.
V: That’s so great!
V: With that out the way, the most important question.. If you could have halo babies with any one cave girl who would it be?!
T: lol. wtf kind of question is that?
V: A good one ![]()
T: I have to choose bs. She’s my favorite person to game with, outside of my college buddies. She’s always a positive voice in the room, and she can either play seriously or goof off depending on the mood. She’s also well versed in vital skills like camping and CPR. Her only flaw is that pesky streak of teamkilling that she just can’t shake. JUST SAY NO TO TEAM KILLING ANGEL
V: But its so much fun!!
T: Yeah it’s all ice cream and puppies until somebody dies! Then they’re just dead and there’s no bringing them back. At least not for the next 10 seconds.
V: Do you have any super secret hidden talents or super powers that nobody knows about?
T: Uhm… well I like to think I’m a pretty good writer. Hopefully that won’t be hidden forever though. My super power is that my shotgun is always host. It is leet like that.
V: Lastly is there anything that you would like to add (such as your dream job, favorite something or other)?
T: Dream job: sports columnist. favorite thing evar: My X-Box and uh…. i can’t think of anything else either
V: Thanks a bunch! And we are so glad that you are a part of our community and continue to enjoy yourself here!
T: Thanks Ash
